ABIGAIL WOOD
As a Miss Earth Wales finalist, my mission is to inspire and educate the next generation about the beauty and importance of our natural world. My passion for nature began in childhood, spending summers in West Wales with my grandparents, where I would catch and identify butterflies, go rock pooling, and visit nature reserves. These formative experiences led me to pursue a BSc in Biology and an MSc in Environmental Biology: Conservation and Resource Management, deepening my understanding of wildlife conservation. Through my Wild About Nature Initiative, I aim to connect children with nature, encouraging them to become passionate conservationists and future eco-leaders.
As a zookeeper, I actively contribute to breeding programmes for endangered species and educate the public about the exotic animals in our care. Conservation is not just my advocacy - it’s my career and my passion. My initiative includes a nature activity book for children, making conservation fun and accessible, and workshops, where children can build birdhouses, bug B&Bs, and hedgehog hotels while learning about native wildlife. Additionally, I am developing a storybook series featuring my golden retriever, Kobe, as he embarks on global adventures, exploring the rich biodiversity of each continent and inspiring children to appreciate and protect nature.
Beyond my professional work, I spend much of my free time outdoors with Kobe, Mabel, and my family, exploring new places and embracing all that nature has to offer. Kobe also volunteers for the Pets As Therapy charity, where we visit schools, care homes, and other establishments, providing calm and comforting sessions for those who appreciate the company of a four-legged friend. We even represented the charity at Crufts in 2023! This experience has reinforced my belief in the power of nature and animals to improve well-being and bring joy to people's lives. Every visit is incredibly special.
As part of Miss Earth Wales, I am committed to using my platform to raise awareness, drive action, and inspire change. Competing for this title is not just about a crown; it’s about being a voice for the environment and using my passion for nature to make a real difference. Through education, conservation, and community engagement, I hope to empower others to take action in protecting our planet. Together, we can make a lasting impact and ensure that nature’s wonders are preserved for generations to come.
